In this dark time of our new president’s inauguration, my old riot grrl punk band “Rair Kx!” is celebrating our 20th Anniversary. You can hear our 1997 song “Cheerleader” here. This band was the beginning of my life in music and it was informed by community, bravery and political struggle. It was a great way to start.
You can buy a T-shirt of the band here, and wear it with the thought of, “I’m gonna take action today to make this world a better, more just place.” The shirt costs $25 — $15 of that goes into production, $5 goes to Planned Parenthood, and $5 goes to Trans Women of Color Collective.
Here’s a nice blurb about the band, written by band member Britta Johnson: “In January of 1996, Laura Veirs asked a group of friends (D. Hester on vocals, Lisa VanArsdale on drums, Britta Johnson on bass) to join her in forming a riot grrl band called Rair Kx! (the ‘Kx!’ part is pronounced with a guttural hissing sound and accompanied by a claw swipe in the air). A cat doodle she drew became the band’s logo. The band was an exciting feminist lesson in women giving themselves permission to be angry in public. Twenty years later, as a pussy-grabber becomes the US President, the angry cat seems more relevant than ever, and we thought we should offer this shirt.”
I am excited to announce my new record with k.d. lang and Neko Case! We spent a couple of years writing songs on-and-off together and recorded the album last November here in Portland with my husband Tucker Martine producing. Fourteen songs made the cut and I’m proud of every one of them. The album, entitled “case/lang/veirs” is a truly collaborative effort and I’m so glad I can finally unzip my lips and tell the world about it!
“case/lang/veirs” the self-titled album (available for preorder this morning) will release June 17 on ANTI- Records with an extensive tour to follow (itinerary below with more to come.) “case/lang/veirs” features fourteen original songs written by Neko Case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs over a period of two-and-a-half years. Full of stunning harmonies and spellbinding rhythms, the artists drew inspiration from alluring, mysterious subjects: a supermoon, the tumbledown story of 70s singer Judee Sill, and the “best kept secret” in Silver Lake, to name but three. Produced by Tucker Martine with the group, their creative sessions commenced in lang’s loft with a view of Mount St. Helens, and in Veirs’ dining room and backyard studio.
+ Special Guest Andy Shauf, * Show is on sale 4/2/16, ** On Sale TBD
Looking forward to seeing you out on the road!
I am proud to announce Introducing Karl Blau produced by my sweetie Tucker Martine. It’s a beautiful album that highlights Karl’s soulful vocals — he really has one of the best voices of our generation. It’s now available for pre-order on my own label Raven Marching Band in N. America and on Bella Union in Europe for international release on May 13th. You may also preorder on iTunes.
Laura Veirs has been making good music for a long time. Over a span of 14 years, she’s released nine albums. She is also a mom of two boys, Tennessee (five years old) and Oz (two and a half).
I was lucky enough to see her open for the Decemberists in 2009, before either of us were mothers. I’ve followed her career ever since. To this day, she gives me hope that creativity and the creation of art can expand and grow along with, well, the birth and creation of small humans (I have two young daughters).
At long last, these two fellows are making a record together!
The one on the left — that’s Karl Blau. The one on the right — that’s Tucker Martine. They are both very important people to me! I am so happy they are collaborating along with some of our best musician friends to make a new record that could be described as “country soul” music.
Please help fund this KICKSTARTER so this baby can see the light of day!!
A bit about the fellows…
KARL BLAU — I met Karl in 1999 when we shared a bill at a coffeeshop/bookstore in Anacortes, WA. I immediately fell in love with his voice. It’s a rare, profoundly soulful and beautiful voice. Karl and I went on to tour the world together many, many times. He’s added lovely parts to almost all of my records. Suffice it to say I am a fan!
TUCKER MARTINE – Tucker is my main-squeeze. We have two kids together. He’s a thorough dishwasher. And he’s a BADASS record producer! We call him “golden ears.” He hears things I can’t hear. I actually have no idea how he does his job. Somehow he transforms “ok” demos and ideas into stunning works of art. WTF?
Anyways, Karl and Tucker have been talking about making a record together for over 10 years and they are well on their way to finishing it. It sounds amazing so far and is highlighting both men’s strengths. If the project gets funded we’ll all be able to hold a wonderful work of art in our hands (and ears) come this September.
Thanks for considering helping us!
